The Varsity Region Championship doubleheader has been scheduled for Sunday evening at Archbishop Wood High School girls gym. The Girls Championship game will tip off at 7:30 PM, preceded by the Boys Championship at 6:00 PM.
Please provide your All Stars (All Varsity and JV teams) and Sportsmanship Award winners (Varsity teams only) if you have not already done so. The All Star games will be held on Saturday, March 6 at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School. Details will be forthcoming.
Standings have been updated with the latest results reported through 12:00 Noon today. There are only two games left (from the original schedule) that have yet to be played, one Varsity Parish and one JV Region. The bracket pairings will be posted tomorrow regardless of the outcomes of those games. The games will have, at best, minimal effect on the standings. It is important to begin scheduling playoff games for those parishes that have available gym times this weekend.
Standings have been updated with the latest results reported through 11:30 AM today.
The Varsity Championship bracket has been updated. Congratulations to the girls from St. Alphonsus and St. Joseph-St. Robert, who won their semifinal games last night and will play in the Region 11 Championship game, date and time to be determined in the near future. Congratulations also go to Ambler Catholic and to Our Lady Help of Christians who capped off their regular seasons with an appearance in the regional semifinals.
Both St. Alphonsus (as the regular season champion and regional finalist) and St. Joseph-St. Robert (as a regional semi-finalist) have also qualified for the Archdiocesan Varsity Girls playoffs.
All Standing have been updated.
The Varsity Championship and Varsity Region brackets have been updated. Varsity Region teams should begin coordinating playoff games as soon as possible.
An update to the standings will be posted tomorrow. IF YOU HAVE ANY MISSING RESULTS, PLEASE GET THEM TO ME RIGHT AWAY! I will be finalizing the remaining playoff brackets Wednesday, February 10 (pending one JV Region game), at which time we will begin scheduling playoffs.
A reminder about playing time for the playoffs.
Varsity Region Championship teams are not subject to the mandatory playing time guidelines used throughout the season. We encourage each coach to play all available players during the playoffs, but there is no minimum playing time requirement.
All other end-of-season playoffs (Varsity Region, NCAA, NIT, and JV Region) will continue to adhere to the mandatory playing time requirements, subject to the same rules and penalties in force during the regular season.
As of this update all games at St Alphosus Gym have been canceled. The 6:15 game at St Albert's Gym is still on. And the 7:15 game at OLHC is pending.
The Varsity Region semi-finals have been set for Monday evening at Gwynedd Mercy Academy High School for 6:15 and 7:30 PM. The first round playoff games must be played this weekend, so in the event that snow cancels games on Saturday, the playoff game rescheduling will take precedence over other Sunday games. If needed, we'll look for a neutral site for those games.
Dates have been added to the Playoff brackets. It is up to the coaches to contact each other and schedule a game time and to contact and confirm the referees. Preference goes to the team that can schedule a doubleheader, including neutral site games. So if a higher seeded team has only a single game gym time, but the lower seeded team it is playing can schedule that game plus another (either with another of its teams or with a neutral site game), then the game will be played at the lower seeded team's site.
Standings have been updated through January 25. If you see any errors or omissions, please let me know.
The initial playoff brackets have been posted. Additional information (dates, rules, instructions, etc.) will be added shortly.
Last evening, Region 11 held the girls Archdiocesan All Star tryouts at Archbishop Wood. We'd like to thank Coach Jim Ricci and the Wood girls basketball team for hosting us and for conducting an excellent session. The girls got a glimpse of what it will be like to play at the high school level.
Again this year, there was a tremendous amount of talent on display. All of the girls that were selected for the tryout showed great skill and intensity. The Region 11 coaches that were in attendance were all impressed by the level of play.
Congratulations to the following girls, who were selected to represent Region 11 in the Archdiocesan All Star game, to be played this Saturday, January 23, at the Fellowship House in Conshohocken:
The two alternate selections from last night's tryout (in order) are:

Parents and Players,
The weather forecast for tomorrow, Saturday, December 19, 2009, calls for significant snowfall. The latest forecast calls for the snow to begin falling as early as 3:00 AM tomorrow, and continue throughout the day. Total accumulations are forecast for between 5" and 10" in our area. The worst of the snow is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon.
If there is any snow on the ground at 8:00 AM tomorrow morning, then all Region 11 CYO activities are postponed. If you have any doubts as to whether games are canceled, please check the Region 11 web site at http://www.region11cyo.org.
If the snowfall is delayed until later in the day, we will start the schedule of games, and continue playing until conditions deteriorate and make travel unsafe. In the event that games are played tomorrow, we will do our best to alert you through email and the Region 11 web site as to when cancellations will begin. Please continue to check your emails and the region's web site (http://www.region11cyo.org) for updated information if the schedule gets underway.
Merry Christmas!

Mandatory Playing Time
Varsity Region Boys and Girls — Beginning in the 2007-2008 season, all rostered Varsity Region players that regularly attend practices and games and adhere to the principles of CYO athletics are required to play a minimum of 3 minutes of each regular season game. Unlike the Junior Varsity playing time rule, the minimum participation may be spread out across the entire game and does not have to be consecutive. The minimum playing time requirement is waived during the Region 11 Varsity Region playoffs. PENALTY: In any case where compelling documentation is provided that a coach has violated this rule, the commissioner has the latitude to impose sanctions up to and including forfeiture of the game(s) in which the offense(s) occurred.
Minimum Participation for Playoff Eligibility — Varsity Region Boys and Girls — All Varsity Region players must play in a minimum of 60% of all games in which they are available to play. For a 12 game season, the requirement is 8 games. For an 11 game season, the requirement is 7 games. Athletes who are unavailable due to injury, illness, bereavement, or other compelling reasons (excluding vacations and other discretionary time off) will have to participate in at least 60% of all of the games in which they are available (e.g., if a player misses 4 games of a 12 game season due to injury, that player will have to play in at least 5 of the other 8 games to be playoff eligible). Documentation of injuries or illnesses (doctor's notes, eyewitness accounts, ...) may be required in the case of disputes. PENALTY: Any player not meeting the minimum playing time requirement is ineligible for all post-season region and Archdiocesan play.
Junior Varsity Region Boys and Girls — Staring with the 2006-2007 season, each player on a team must play at least 3 consecutive minutes per half (9 or more players per team) or 3 1/2 consecutive minutes per half (8 or fewer players per team). This rule is subject to review and change prior to playoffs. Note: It is likely that the playing time requirements for smaller teams (8 or fewer players) will increase to between 4 and 5 minutes per half, so make sure you are working with all of your players so they are ready to contribute come playoff time.
Junior Varsity Parish Boys and Girls — Starting with the 2006-2007 season, each player on a team must play at least 1/2 half of each game, subject to the substitution rule described under "Length of Game - Parish."
Lord, give me strength to shoot the ball,
And when I do please let it fall
Then let me run to the other end,
The other team, help me defend.
Let me jump and grab the ball
When off the rim the shot does fall.
Help me make the pass that's right
So that the scoreboard we can light.
Show me how to play this sport,
Let me fly around the court.
And whether we should lose or win,
Let us the other team commend.
But first of all, dear Lord, I pray,
please tell the coach to let me play!
